1. Use the Rule of Three
We’ve discussed the Rule of Three before, and we will recommend it every time. The best way to ensure that you love your color choices together is to work with three main coordinating colors. While neutrals don’t have to count as one of your three, you can certainly choose to have them. The idea is that these three coordinating colors will make up the entire exterior of your home, in a ratio of about 60-30-10. This allows you to have your main color, trim color and a final color for a pop of color or accent.
2. Don’t Forget Lighting
When choosing a color, don’t forget to consider the lighting that your home receives. Bright sunlight will wash colors out, meaning a darker choice may be better for your home. When deciding on a color, we recommend looking at that color in the same lighting your home is in every day, that way you know if it’ll be too washed out or too dark.
3. Test it Out
The easiest way to check how your new paint color will look is to test it out! You can do this by priming a section of your home and checking how the paint will actually look on your home. This way, you can see how it looks on your home before fully committing to painting your whole house that color.
This is also a good idea, so you aren’t solely relying on paint chips. Paint chips are great at showing what the color should look like but depending on factors such as base color and lighting, the color may appear differently on your home.
4. Don’t Forget Fixed Elements
Another piece of advice we have given before and will give again every time – don’t forget to consider the colors of fixed elements of your home. Your roof for example. If you are planning on replacing your roof soon, then you can choose a roof color to match your paint, but if you recently replaced your roof it’s best to make sure that the colors you choose complement each other.
